The Palisades Interstate Parkway is diligently and aggressively patrolled by the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police. They give out a lot of speeding tickets and almost everyone who gets a speeding ticket also gets a careless driving ticket. There have been several proposals to disband the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police and to absorb into the NJ State Police. But, amazingly, the department has exhibited resiliency and still persists to this day. Typical speeding tickets are 39:4-98 Speeding 75/50 with careless driving 39:4-97. Watch out if you have a commercial vehicle or any vehicle with any commercial message attached to it, for you will be stopped and ticketed for driving a commercial vehicle on the Parkway. Don't urinate on the side of the road or you can be cited for indecent exposure. Don't drive on the PIP with drugs or guns, even a BB gun in your car, don't park illegally at the gas stations, you will be cited. And don't do anything in the Park (not on the highway) that you wouldn't mind being on the cover of the NY Times the next day. The cops seem to have eyes on the back of their heads, and the can and will ruin your day.
The motto of the PIP police is "Increasing the safety of the motoring public and park patrons through proactive enforcement of motor vehicle, criminal, maritime statutes as well as the rules and regulations of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission." The PIP Court is located in the NJ Headquarters on Alpine Approach Road, near exit 2. The Court pone number is 201-768-8702.
Recently there have been
calls to disband the Palisades Interstate Park Police, due to their
"irregular" practices. And recently, believe it or not, the Chief
of Police Michael Coppola, the chief of the Palisades Interstate
Parkway Police Department, was arrested Thursday for allegedly buying
cocaine and having it shipped to a Passaic County post office box,
authorities said in a news release. Investigators believed Coppola was
ordering drugs through the internet and having them delivered to the
post office box, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's
Office. So prosecutor's office detectives ensnared Coppola, 43,
by putting a package filled with imitation cocaine in the post office
box in response to a recent order, according to the prosecutor's
office. Coppola allegedly picked up the package, which he thought
contained cocaine, on Thursday, according to the prosecutor's office. A
team of detectives then stopped and arrested the chief on Route 80 in
Ridgefield Park. Where Coppola, of Totowa, was going after he picked up the package is unknown.
